QUICK MEDICATION REMINDER

Tylenol and/or Advil DO NOT need to be provided from home.  If your child needs a pain reliever/fever reducer (or even Benadryl for an allergic reaction) while on the trip, the Camp Bournedale nurse will provide and administer it to your child.

Any presciption meds, over-the-counter meds (that NEED to be taken at camp), and/or EPI-PENS MUST BE PROVIDED FROM HOME. These medications must be in their original prescription containers with instructions for use.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Camp Bournedale
FINAL IMPORTANT REMINDER

We will be going to Camp Bournedale on Wednesday 23rd orThursday September 24th.

Please read the following information carefully:

  • Have your child at school, with luggage, at the designated time for your school. You must drop them off. They cannot take the bus to school!

  • If your child has medication that they need to bring and have administered, please put the medication in a plastic zip lock bag clearly labeled with your child’s name. Medication MUST be in the original prescription container with directions for use. All medications including INHALERS and EPI-PENS must be provided from home.  The inhalers and epi-pens that our school nurse has at Fox Hill will not be provided.  Please contact our nurse, Suzy Shields if you have any questions. Medications need to be checked in with a teacher/nurse the morning of departure.   We will give the Camp Bournedale nurse all medications upon arrival.

  • ALL luggage must be labeled with child’s name and school (i.e. sleeping bags and pillows should be inside a bag [trash, duffel, etc] with name and school clearly labeled on the outside.)  

  • Your child will need to be picked up at Pine Glen or Francis Wyman at 1:30pm on Thursday Sept. 24. Fox Hill and Memorial students need to picked up at school at 1:30pm on Friday, September 25th.  

  • Students will not be able take the regular dismissal bus with their luggage.  If your child is going home with another parent you must write a note and give it to a teacher as soon as possible

  • See equipment list (in previous blog post)

  • IF YOU HAVE NOT RETURNED THE STUDENT INFORMATION/HEALTH FORM, YOU MUST DO SO ASAP.  YOUR CHILD CANNOT ATTEND THE TRIP WITHOUT IT.

CAMP BOURNEDALE-
EQUIPMENT/PACKING LIST

       The following list suggests what Burlington students should bring with them for their outdoor education experience at Camp Bournedale.  Each student should have plenty of comfortable clothes.  The weather forecast will probably determine the amount and type of clothing you pack.  Luggage should be confined to one piece.  It is recommended that all clothing be put inside a plastic trash bag and then into a backpack or travel bag.  Label all bags with child’s name and school. Please note: NO CELL PHONES OR ELECTRONICS PERMITTED and NO CHILD SHOULD HAVE ANY MEDICATIONS. ALL MEDICATIONS SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTED ON THE SCHOOL HEALTH FORM AND SIGNED BY YOUR CHILD’S PHYSICIAN.  MEDICATIONS SHOULD BE GIVEN TO OUR NURSE THE MORNING OF DEPARTURE OR PRIOR TO IF NEEDED.

Is there some educational value to the fifth grade Bournedale trip?

  • promotes student to student and student to teacher relationships
  • encourages independence
  • the students all take three actual classes - content revolves around science, social studies and team building

I’m still a little nervous, what can I do?

  • feel free to visit ahead and take a look
  • give a call ahead but you are welcome
  • average schools have been going to bournedale for 25 years

What do mealtimes look like?

  • family style
  • food allergies are met - call 2 weeks ahead and tell them
still discreet
  • vegetarians needs are met - call ahead

My child takes daily medications. How will these or other medical needs be met?

  • 24 7 nurse
  • nurse administers all medications including over the counter and keeps them safe
discreetly has teachers get students during meal time: No announcements
  • closer to the end of the school year, you will receive a medical form. This form will require your signature saying no to all medications or a doctor’s signature allowing for any prescribed AND/OR over the counter medications
  • ***there will be no medications allowed or administered without a doctor’s signature***

What are the sleeping arrangements? What do the cabins look like?

  • all have their own bed and storage area
  • bathroom and shower
  • generally 8 to 10 students per cabin
  • always two same sex parent chaperones per cabin
  • moms can be with girls or boys
  • dads can be with boys only
  • no phones for students. Chaperones are not allowed to let students use their phones


What are the classes?

  • Lobster Tails - out on the harbor, history, haul up and measure the lobsters.

  • Marine Lab - 2 classrooms: touch tanks and shark dissection
  • Project Adventure: problem solving and group work

Are all time structured times?

  • some less structured times
  • rec time after dinner and before breakfast

What if I want to chaperone?

  • parents chaperone within a cabin for the school their child attends
  • CORI must be up to date with Burlington Public Schools (back of the high school at central office/bring your license)
  • classes will mix kids from schools
  • mealtime tables are grouped boys and girls, groups of 4 of each student selected to make table of 8 plus 2 parents

Tips and tricks

  • Pack extra trash bags for repacking
  • chaperones - bring games, nailpolish, etc for night time - there is some in the cabin free time after the magic show

INFORMATIONAL MEETING - Wed. May 20th!!!!

The director of Camp Bournedale is holding an informational meeting for all current 4th grade parents.  

The meeting will be held at Francis Wyman Auditorium on Wednesday May 20th 2015 at 6:00pm.

Darin Fabrizio (camp director) will be showing a PowerPoint presentation discussing the educational programs and facilities provided to all students who attend Camp Bournedale.  Darin will answer any questions and address any concerns that you may have. Teachers will also be there to answer any questions.

In September, the fifth grade is going to Camp Bournedale in Plymouth, MA!! Francis Wyman and Pine Glen are going Sept. 23 and 24.  Memorial and Fox Hill are going Sept. 24 and 25.
 
Camp Bournedale is an overnight, nature-based camp committed to providing schools with exciting, enriching and rewarding educational and social experiences.  The unparalleled opportunities for hands-on science, social studies, health, and physical education provide tangible learning experiences for every student.  
Over the last several years, we’ve had a great turnout and we hope that the word continues to spread on how beneficial this experience is for all fifth grade students.  We really urge all fourth grade parents in Burlington to attend this informational meeting!!!

CAMP BOURNEDALE TRIP - Sept. 2015

CAMP BOURNEDALE NOTICE!!!!!!!


Dear Parents of “Soon to Be” Fifth Graders,


The time is fast approaching for our annual fifth grade overnight field trip to Camp Bournedale in Plymouth, MA.  The dates for the trip are September 24th and 25th (two days and one night).  Francis Wyman and Pine Glen will be attending Sept. 23-24th. This optional, yet highly recommended and popular trip is a great way to kick off the school year!  


Please fill-out and return the permission slip (necessary) and chaperone request form (optional) with a check or cash. The cost of the trip (including transportation) is $ 175.00 per child.  Checks should be made payable to “Burlington Public Schools-Camp Bournedale”. Due to the timing of the trip in September we are requiring FULL PAYMENT this spring.  If you absolutely need a refund in the fall (child illness, family emergency, etc) it will be granted. Checks and forms are due back to school by Friday June 12th.


The director of Camp Bournedale and 5th grade teachers will be holding a district-wide informational meeting for all parents of current fourth graders at the Francis Wyman auditorium. This date and time will be announced shortly.  Please be on the lookout for this notice!
